Mike Johnson, the ‘principled conservative’ who promised to defend civil liberties, just used worthless legislative candy to trick hard-right members into approving expanded government surveillance. He dangled a crypto provision he knew would die in the Senate—essentially lying to get votes for the exact deep-state powers his own allies spent years opposing. So much for restoring integrity to Republican leadership.
